The proboscis monkey is a mammal found exclusively on the island of Borneo, where it has evolved over millions of years. Its most distinctive feature, its unusually large nose, remains a subject of scientific interest. However, this unique primate faces a critical threat to its survival. Habitat destruction and relentless hunting for use in traditional medicine have dramatically reduced the species’ population. Currently, fewer than 7,000 proboscis monkeys remain in the wild. This drastic decline highlights the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect this iconic resident of Borneo and prevent its extinction.
