Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has been sentenced to four years and two months in prison by Brazil’s Supreme Court. The conviction stems from attempts to pressure the Trump administration into retaliating against Brazil with economic sanctions and visa restrictions. The aim was to disrupt legal proceedings against his father, according to the court. Prosecutors alleged Bolsonaro lobbied for sanctions on Brazilian justices and import tariffs on Brazilian goods, which resulted in a 50% import tariff imposed by Trump in August of last year and the revocation of a visa for a key justice. The court found evidence of repeated efforts to obstruct the case against the former president. Bolsonaro claims the charges are politically motivated to disqualify him from running in upcoming presidential elections, and alleges he was never formally served with a summons. The sentence disqualifies him from holding public office for eight years.
