Veteran NHL player Jonathan Toews announced his retirement from professional hockey on Friday, concluding a celebrated 16-year career. Primarily known for his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, Toews captained the team for 15 years, from 2008 to 2023, leading them to three Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Drafted third overall in 2006 by the Blackhawks, Toews was a central figure in the team’s decade-long dominance. Health issues previously forced a pause in his career, but he returned for a final season with the Winnipeg Jets. His retirement marks the end of an era for both the Blackhawks organization and the NHL. Toews’ final game ironically came against Finland’s national team, “Leijonat”, during international play.
