The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) has launched a new mobile application, “Virtual Memories,” dedicated to documenting unmarked war crime sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The app currently features virtual memorials at 50 locations, offering a digital space for remembrance and education. BIRN hopes the application will specifically engage younger generations in learning about the country’s turbulent past during the Bosnian War. These sites often lack physical markers or memorials, making the app a vital tool for preserving collective memory. "Virtual Memories" utilizes geolocation to guide users to the locations, providing detailed information about the events that transpired there. The initiative aims to combat historical revisionism and promote reconciliation by ensuring these tragic events are not forgotten. BIRN plans to expand the app to include more sites in the future.
