German authorities believe a deadly attack at Berlin’s Pride event on Saturday night was an act of Islamist terrorism. Interior Minister Dobrindt stated all evidence points in that direction, confirming the suspect attacked people with a machete. The suspect, 21-year-old Abdul B., remains at large despite a massive police search involving approximately 2,000 officers and the seizure of mobile phones. One woman was killed, and officials now report 29 injuries – a significant increase from earlier estimates of sixteen. Witnesses report the suspect drove a van into attendees before continuing the assault on foot with a machete, causing severe injuries. The suspect, of Lebanese origin and born in Berlin in 2005, was previously known to authorities and had ties to “Islamist circles,” and was previously convicted, though details haven't been released. Prosecutors had previously appealed the original sentence.
