To mark the Day of German Unity in Duitsland, the Duitslandmuseum in Berlijn has added a unique item to its collection: a loaf of bread purchased on June 26, 1990, in the former German Democratic Republic (DDR). The bread was bought by Michael Hagedorn, a DDR citizen, shortly after the fall of the Berlijnse Muur and the initial steps toward reunification. Prior to the introduction of the Deutsche Mark in Oost-Duitsland on July 1, 1990, Hagedorn and his wife purchased the bread as a precaution, fearing potential shortages. Despite the availability of bread and acceptance of both currencies after July 2nd, the loaf was preserved and carried through multiple moves and appliance upgrades. The family never discarded it, viewing it as a part of their history. Ultimately, Hagedorn donated the bread to the Duitslandmuseum after discussing it with the museum's director, ensuring its preservation as a relic of a pivotal time in Duitsland's history.
