Belgium’s Interior Minister Quintin is proposing mandatory license plates for electric scooters following a surge in shooting incidents in Brussels linked to drug gangs. The Minister highlighted recent cases where e-scooters were used in shootings, but were untraceable due to the lack of registration. This absence of identification creates a significant gap in security efforts, hindering investigations even with surveillance footage. Brussels has seen a marked increase in violent clashes between gangs vying for control of drug-selling locations, with residents reporting a frequent occurrence of shootings. The anonymity afforded by unlicensed e-scooters allows perpetrators, often young individuals, to quickly escape detection. This proposal arrives after a ban on shared e-scooters was introduced in Brussels in June, and the Minister is also considering increased military support for the police in combating drug-related violence.
