Bangladesh is working to bolster its energy security by developing two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals. The first, a floating storage and regasification unit on Moheshkhali Island in the Cox’s Bazar district, is slated for completion by 2028 with a capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd). A land-based terminal at Matarbari is planned for 2030, expected to process around 1,000 mmcfd. These additions will supplement Bangladesh's existing two floating LNG terminals, currently capable of regasifying up to 1,100 mmcfd. The expansion comes as Bangladesh anticipates significant increases in LNG demand, projecting a need for 3-4 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) from 2026-2030, rising to 17-18 mtpa between 2031-2040. Recent disruptions to supplies from Qatar, due to the US-Iran war impacting shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, have prompted Bangladesh to diversify its sourcing and explore alternative deals.
