Bangladesh’s newly appointed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will embark on his first foreign tour, visiting Malaysia and China. The trip notably excludes neighboring India, a shift from previous administrations. Discussions in China will focus on potential trade and infrastructure projects, including the Teesta river restoration project. Malaysia is a key destination due to its significant population of Bangladeshi workers, comprising over a third of its foreign workforce. The visits are intended to bolster Bangladesh’s economic partnerships following recent political changes. Relations with India remain complex, marked by the presence of the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India and ongoing border disputes regarding migrants. Rahman assumed office in February after a period of interim rule following the 2024 uprising.
