Chinese scientists are exploring bamboo as a new solution in the fight against desertification along the country’s “Great Green Wall.” For decades, efforts to combat desert expansion have relied on materials like straw, plants, and plastics, but these methods face limitations including short lifespans and potential environmental drawbacks. Bamboo, renowned for its rapid growth and resilience, offers a potentially more sustainable and effective alternative. Researchers believe bamboo can address ecological risks and health concerns associated with current sand-fixing techniques. The new strategy aligns with Beijing’s recently released five-year conservation plan, focused on preserving forests and grasslands. Initial projects are underway to assess bamboo's viability in strengthening this critical environmental barrier.
