The initial phase of the Rail Baltica project is currently underfunded across all three Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Reports indicate that none of the nations possess the necessary financial resources to independently complete this first stage of the railway infrastructure development. The project’s progression is now heavily reliant on the next multiannual EU budget, anticipated to become available post-2028. This reliance highlights a significant dependency on external funding for the project’s continuation. The situation was reported by LSM’s Brussels correspondent, Ilze Nagla, on June 27th. The lack of immediate funding creates uncertainty regarding the project’s timeline and implementation. Further delays are possible pending EU budgetary decisions.
