An Indonesian court sentenced 35 Indian nationals to prison terms Wednesday for their involvement in an online gambling network operating on the tourist island of Bali. Police arrested 39 Indians in February, with 35 ultimately charged and convicted. The sentences range from two to two and a half years in prison. Gambling is illegal in Indonesia, with penalties applying to bookmakers, bettors, promoters, and players alike. Following their sentences, the individuals will be deported and barred from re-entering the Republic of Indonesia. The group entered Indonesia on tourist visas and allegedly promoted and managed transactions for an online gambling site since late last year, generating approximately $450,000 monthly. Indonesian authorities are also re-evaluating visa exemptions following a surge in arrests related to illegal gambling and fraud.
