An Austrian mountain peak, artificially raised to 3,000 meters in 1988 and named after cartographer Wolfgang Pillewizer, is reverting to its original height of 2,999 meters. This decision stems from Pillewizer’s past association with the Nazi regime. The mountain was originally constructed with stones to reach the 3,000-meter mark, a symbolic elevation. Authorities have determined that honoring Pillewizer is no longer appropriate given his historical background. As a result, the peak will also be stripped of its name, becoming anonymous. The move reflects a growing trend of confronting and reassessing monuments and honors linked to individuals with ties to Nazism in Austria and beyond. The change aims to distance the mountain from any association with this problematic past.
