Austria’s Supreme Court of Justice (OGH) has concluded a legal dispute stemming from the awarding of a report on right-wing extremism. The ruling mandates that the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) must publish a retraction. Specifically, the FPÖ is prohibited from labeling the report as “pseudo-scientific.” This decision follows a legal challenge initiated after the FPÖ publicly criticized the report’s validity. The court also ordered the FPÖ to cover the associated legal costs of the proceedings. This outcome signifies a defeat for the right-wing party in its attempt to discredit research concerning extremism. The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the politicization of research into sensitive social issues within Austria.
