An Australian app designed for women has been definitively ruled against in a legal battle regarding the exclusion of a transgender woman. Roxanne Tickle, a 57-year-old Australian trans woman, was initially accepted into the “Giggle for Girls” app in 2021 but was later removed after founder Sall Grover reviewed her profile. Tickle filed a discrimination complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission, which ultimately led to a lawsuit she won. Grover argued that the app’s admission policy prioritized assigned sex at birth, a claim rejected by the court. The Australian High Court recently dismissed a request to re-examine the case, finalizing the ruling and upholding the awarded damages. Tickle received AUD $20,000 in compensation, plus AUD $100,000 in legal costs, with the case becoming known in Australia as “Tickle vs. Giggle”. Following publicity surrounding the case in 2022, the app was shut down.
