Australia is increasing fines for social media platforms failing to enforce its ban on under-16s, doubling the maximum penalty to Aus$99 million ($68 million). The new legislation aims to address widespread circumvention of the rules, with reports of underage users employing various methods to access platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that tech companies are not adequately complying with the existing law. The eSafety Commissioner is actively investigating potential non-compliance and will receive expanded powers to enforce the ban. Despite blocking over five million accounts belonging to underage users since December, initial research suggests the ban has had limited impact on overall social media usage among young people. Several other nations are closely watching Australia’s efforts as they consider similar restrictions.
