World Athletics is implementing a video-assisted referee (VAR) system, similar to that used in football, to definitively determine winners in close sprint finishes. The organization has partnered with Sony and Hawk-Eye to introduce 3D computer graphics recreating race moments. This new technology will produce immersive virtual replays, providing a clearer view of photo finishes than previously available. The aim is to resolve disputes and ensure accurate results in track events. These virtual replays will be showcased at competitions starting this year. This move marks a significant step towards increased precision and transparency in athletics officiating.
