Yerevan, Armenia is experiencing a burgeoning underground drag scene despite significant societal challenges. While attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community are evolving—potentially influenced by events like the war in Ukraine—drag performers still face considerable risk. Despite attracting large audiences, evidenced by events drawing hundreds, the scene is plagued by police raids and familial disapproval. A previous attack, like the 2012 firebombing of a queer club, demonstrates the potential for violence. These performers risk much to express themselves artistically and build a community. The current situation highlights a complex landscape of progress and persistent prejudice within Armenia. The scene’s existence, however, signifies a growing, albeit fragile, acceptance.
