During the funeral of Archbishop Dom Osório Citora Afonso of Nampula, Archbishop Inácio Saúre delivered a homily appealing for an end to violence in Mozambique. Saúre drew parallels between the Archbishop’s murder and the betrayal of Jesus Christ, suggesting the possibility of involvement by individuals within Dom Osório’s inner circle. He indicated “strong indications” point to a betrayal, potentially causing a significant scandal if confirmed. Despite the gravity of the suspicions, Saúre rejected calls for retribution, instead advocating for mercy and the redemption of those responsible. The sermon also celebrated Dom Osório’s dedicated pastoral work and selfless service to the Church and community. Saúre urged that the Archbishop’s death serve as a turning point, ending the “shameful and sinful practice” of violence and political assassination in Mozambique.
