Facing water scarcity in the Skåne region, authorities in Malmö, Sweden have begun utilizing a newly developed network of 15 wells. Water sourced from these wells is estimated to be up to 900 years old. Residents have reported a metallic, stony taste to the water, a characteristic of its prolonged underground storage. While not a long-term solution, the initiative is considered a valuable contribution to mitigating the current drought conditions. Josefin Barup, Head of Drinking Water at VA Syd, emphasized the water’s role as a supplemental resource. The project aims to bolster water supplies as the region experiences increased demand and reduced rainfall. Further monitoring will assess the long-term sustainability and palatability of this ancient water source.
