Aristides of Miletus, a 2nd-century BCE Greek author, is now recognized as the originator of “Greek Romance” – a novel literary genre for his time. His collection, known as the Milesian Tales, comprises six books of short, picaresque stories centered around romantic and erotic adventures. These tales represent some of the earliest examples of erotic literature in ancient Greece. Aristides’ work focuses on short, adventurous narratives, differing from epic poems prevalent at the time. Scholars are highlighting the significance of these rediscovered stories in understanding the evolution of narrative fiction. The Milesian Tales offer insight into the cultural and literary landscape of the Hellenistic period.
