Amsterdam UMC has announced that the VUmc hospital will cease functioning as a clinical facility by 2040, with all care responsibilities transferred to the AMC location in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. The VUmc will continue its operations as a center for research, education, and training. This decision follows the 2018 merger of the two academic hospitals, and is driven by financial considerations related to maintaining two locations. Amsterdam UMC cites the need for investment in digitalization and new technologies, as well as the increasing complexity of patient care, as key factors. The move aims to streamline services and improve patient care by centralizing resources. Certain care services have already been moved to the AMC, including emergency care, and a final decision will be made this summer following consultation with stakeholders. The hospital assures that there will be no immediate changes for patients, students, or staff.
