Over 100 people have been evacuated and approximately 150 homes damaged by wildfires in the Annaba province of northeastern Algeria, according to the Interior Minister. These fires, which began Tuesday in the mountainous Seraidi commune, continue to be battled by firefighters utilizing both ground and air support. The blazes are part of a wider wave of fires across northern Algeria over the past ten days, which have already claimed six lives. Authorities have evacuated residents from threatened areas, and over 1,550 fires have been recorded in the last 12 days nationally. Four individuals suspected of arson have been detained and face charges including sabotage endangering lives and property, potentially punishable by death. Algeria has experienced increasingly devastating wildfires in recent years, resulting in significant loss of life, forestland, and homes.
