A nationwide alcohol ban has been implemented at all 5,700 train stations in Germany, effective today, in response to a surge in violent incidents. Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German rail operator, introduced the measure to enhance safety following thousands of reported incidents last year. A particularly severe incident, where a train conductor was seriously injured after being assaulted by an intoxicated passenger, served as a catalyst for the ban. The prohibition applies to all station buildings and platforms, with exceptions for licensed establishments and onboard trains—where DB continues to sell alcohol. While initial enforcement will focus on informing offenders, escalating situations may result in area bans, though concerns regarding enforceability without increased police presence have been raised. DB previously trialed the ban at stations in major cities, reporting a reduction in violence, and stresses the ban will be active on all holidays and during major events.
