Architecture students at Alabama’s Rural Studio constructed a unique home, the Lucy Carpet House, using 72,000 donated carpet tiles. The project provided a much-needed home and prayer space for the Harris family in Hale County. Rural Studio is an ongoing initiative where students address affordable housing challenges in rural Alabama through practical building experience. Over two hundred projects have been completed in the county as part of this program, benefitting local families. The Lucy Carpet House exemplifies innovative and sustainable building practices. It demonstrates a commitment to community development via design and construction. This initiative aims to both serve a critical need and educate future architects.
