Dhaka is piloting an AI-powered surveillance system at busy intersections, dubbed ‘Digital Police’. These cameras are currently focused on identifying traffic violations such as running red lights, driving on the wrong side of the road, and using mobile phones while driving, as well as helmetless motorcycle riders. The system utilizes artificial intelligence to detect these infractions, shifting enforcement from human observation to automated detection. While initially implemented for traffic management, the technology’s capabilities extend beyond simple traffic violations. Authorities have indicated potential for broader applications, raising questions about expanded surveillance. The cameras are currently in a trial phase, monitoring roads throughout the city. This initiative marks a significant step towards technology-driven law enforcement in Bangladesh’s capital.
