A large-scale trial in Pakistan reveals that integrating generative AI into trial courts leads to a significant increase in case resolution. The AI assistant, named JudgeGPT, built on OpenAI’s GPT-4, helped resolve an additional 1,848 cases annually – a 6.3% increase. Researchers found this increase didn’t compromise the quality of judgments. The study highlights the importance of targeted training for judges alongside AI implementation, leading to greater adoption and sustained use. Judges who received training were more likely to utilize the tool effectively, focusing on tasks like text improvement. The trial, encompassing roughly half of Pakistan’s trial judges, demonstrates AI's potential to improve judicial efficiency and productivity within the legal system. The results suggest a positive shift in judicial attitudes towards AI as a valuable tool.
