A new report by the Amahoro Coalition reveals that Africa’s 43.1 million displaced people – including refugees and those internally displaced – contribute an estimated $27 billion annually to the continent’s economy. The research, titled “Hiding in Plain Sight: Africa’s $27B Displacement Market Opportunity,” highlights the significant economic activity generated by this population. This figure encompasses spending on essential goods and services by displaced individuals and the organizations supporting them. The report details the economic scale of displacement across Africa, challenging conventional perceptions of displaced populations as solely reliant on aid. The findings suggest a substantial, yet often overlooked, economic impact linked to displacement. The Amahoro Coalition released the report on Thursday, aiming to reframe the narrative surrounding displacement in Africa.
