Civil society organizations (CSOs) from across Africa are rallying behind former Senegalese President Macky Sall’s candidacy for United Nations Secretary-General. The groups cite his extensive political and diplomatic experience, along with his commitment to a more representative multilateralism for the African continent, as key reasons for their support. Meeting in Cotonou, organizations from West, Central, North, and East Africa officially endorsed Sall’s bid, coordinated by Cyrille Nguiegang. The initiative aims to unify African CSOs around a candidate representing peace, dialogue, and multilateralism. Supporters emphasize Sall’s understanding of decision-making processes at national, continental, and international levels. They also highlight his role in diplomatic efforts related to the Ukraine war during his tenure as head of the African Union, seeing his experience as a valuable asset for the UN’s highest office.
