General Chris Donahue, recognized as the last U.S. soldier to leave Afghanistan following the 2021 withdrawal, will step down from his current role as commander of U.S. Army forces in Europe and Africa on July 2, 2026. The announcement was made by Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith. Donahue’s tenure in the European and African command has been relatively brief, lasting approximately 18 months. The Army has not publicly disclosed the reasons for Donahue’s departure. He gained prominence for leading the final elements of the U.S. military out of Kabul’s airport. His replacement has not yet been named.
