The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) requires event organizers to use reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging. Despite this mandate, almost all compostable packaging generated at public events is currently being sent to landfill. This is due to a critical lack of composting infrastructure within the ACT to process this type of waste. The policy aims to reduce environmental impact, but its effectiveness is undermined by the absence of suitable facilities. Event organizers are complying with the packaging requirements, but the final destination of the waste defeats the purpose of using compostable materials. Authorities have not yet addressed the infrastructure gap, leaving a disconnect between policy and practical waste management. This situation raises questions about the viability of similar mandates without adequate supporting infrastructure.
