Heavy traffic congestion is building along a major Accra highway due to the large number of waste tricycles, known locally as “aboboyaa,” transporting refuse to the McCarthy Hills dumpsite. The queues of these tricycles are particularly acute along the N1 highway, stretching from Sakaman junction through Mallam and Tetegu junctions. The situation is exacerbated by muddy road conditions, hindering efficient waste removal. This congestion is impacting traffic flow on a key transport artery in the city. The reliance on these tricycles highlights challenges in Accra’s waste management infrastructure. Authorities have not yet commented on solutions to mitigate the disruption. The visual evidence shows a significant build-up of waste collection vehicles.
