Accell, the company behind popular bicycle brands like Sparta and Batavus, has requested a postponement of payment, a step often preceding bankruptcy. The Dutch manufacturer has struggled with financial difficulties for some time, initially impacted by supply chain disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic which led to an inability to meet demand. Subsequently, the company was left with a large surplus of bicycles when logistics improved. Earlier this year, a deal with creditors resulted in them taking ownership of the company, but this was viewed as a temporary fix. Attempts to find a new owner, including merger discussions, have failed. Accell CEO Jonas Nilsson described the situation as "very sad and frustrating," and the company has already undergone several reorganizations, including closing its last Dutch factory.
