Amnesty International and Yiaga Africa have strongly criticized the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in Abuja for reportedly telling residents to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or face eviction. The statement, made ahead of the 2027 elections, has been labelled a serious violation of democratic principles and a blatant attempt to intimidate voters. Both organizations have condemned the comment as a threat to free and fair elections, and a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights. They emphasized that voters should be allowed to exercise their franchise without fear of reprisal or coercion. This incident raises concerns about the potential for similar intimidation tactics during upcoming elections. The organizations are calling for authorities to investigate the matter and ensure accountability to protect the integrity of the electoral process. Such behaviour undermines the foundation of democracy and citizen participation.
