The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) has identified a concerning trend of demotivation among recipients of social assistance (bansos). This demotivation stems from the prolonged duration – over five years – for which 4.5 million Indonesian citizens have been receiving aid. The Ministry believes that extended reliance on assistance may be disincentivizing recipients from seeking self-sufficiency. This finding raises questions about the long-term effectiveness of current social assistance programs in Indonesia. Kemensos is now analyzing the root causes of this demotivation to determine how to better support beneficiaries in transitioning towards economic independence. Further investigation will be implemented to address this issue and ensure aid programs foster empowerment rather than dependency. The Ministry aims to revise strategies to encourage sustainable livelihoods among aid recipients across Indonesia.
