Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined significant challenges that could threaten the 2027 general elections. These concerns, revealed by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, include heightened security risks and the potential for localized electoral violence. Vote-buying, hate speech, and the spread of disinformation are also identified as major issues. A newer and concerning threat is Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), which INEC is actively monitoring. The commission acknowledges these factors could undermine the credibility of the upcoming polls. INEC is now focused on strategies to mitigate these risks and ensure a fair and transparent electoral process in 2027. These proactive measures aim to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
