Leading scientists have cautioned FIFA about the potential health risks posed by extreme heat during the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In an open letter, experts in health, climate science, and sports performance argue that current FIFA protocols are inadequate to address anticipated weather conditions. They specifically call for extended cooling breaks and clearer guidelines for postponing or rescheduling matches played in extreme heat. Researchers estimate that 14 of the 16 planned stadium locations could experience temperatures exceeding safe levels for high-intensity athletic activity, with some cities potentially reaching 40°C. The combination of heat, humidity, and solar radiation significantly increases the risk of heat stress for players. FIFA has acknowledged the concerns, stating its commitment to the health and safety of all involved and that climate risks are being integrated into tournament planning.
