A new annual report from the United Nations concludes that exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming is now unavoidable. This threshold has been a central focus in climate change mitigation efforts for over a decade by diplomats, politicians, and scientists. The failure to remain below this limit underscores the difficulty of tackling climate change effectively. Increased emissions from the continued burning of oil, coal, and natural gas, along with policy reversals – particularly the rollback of climate policies in the United States under President Trump – contributed to this outcome. While nearly all countries pledged in Paris ten years ago to limit warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, and preferably under 1.5 degrees Celsius, experts increasingly doubted the latter goal was achievable. The UN now acknowledges the world will surpass this 1.5-degree mark, as stated in reports from September and reiterated in the recent annual assessment. Discussions on this will continue at the climate summit in Antalya, Türkiye, in November, with the focus shifting to minimizing and shortening the duration of the overshoot.
