Ulaanbaatar city is advancing several new public transportation projects. The second phase of the tender for consultancy services related to the design (DED) and operational planning (DOD) of the “Special Lane Bus BRT” project will open on October 26, 2026, with technical and price proposals to be evaluated. The tender was announced internationally, receiving 23 submissions for the DED consultancy and 13 for the DOD consultancy, from which 12 participants were shortlisted. Project leaders highlighted the need to increase the involvement of power engineers and secure necessary professional staff for project implementation. Regarding the “Ulaanbaatar Tram” project, the feasibility study is complete and solutions are being sought to expedite land acquisition. Preparatory work for the feasibility study of the “Sky Shuttle” transport vehicles, signed with BYD Group, has begun; this will involve battery-powered vehicles on elevated tracks. The first tram line from Sukhbaatar Square to Zunжин is proposed to be built by a Russian company, while the second line will be funded by the city budget.
