The United Kingdom will deploy fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to bolster its defenses against escalating attacks from Yemen’s Houthi rebels, the UK government announced Tuesday. The Ministry of Defence stated the deployment consists of RAF Typhoon jets to conduct defensive counter-air missions, protecting Saudi cities and critical infrastructure, but will not participate in offensive strikes. Alongside the fighter jets, a military transport aircraft will facilitate the movement of defense materials within Saudi Arabia, supported by UK military advisors assisting Saudi staff officers. Defence Minister Wes Streeting condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, specifically referencing the repeated targeting of Riyadh’s international airport, which has faced 20 strikes this month alone, resulting in casualties. The Houthis have also implemented a naval blockade, impacting oil exports and causing energy price increases, exacerbating the ongoing conflict. This deployment follows the rekindling of Yemen’s civil war in September after a truce collapsed, with Saudi Arabia leading a coalition supporting the Yemeni government since 2015.
