Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that the newly reconstructed Katonga bridge on the Kampala-Masaka highway is designed for a lifespan of 120 years. This follows a three-year period after the original bridge collapsed due to severe flash floods in May 2023, caused by heavy rainfall. The replacement aims to provide a durable solution for transportation along this key route connecting Kampala and Masaka. Officials express confidence in the new structure’s resilience, promising long-term service. The project addressed a significant disruption to travel and commerce following the initial collapse. The restored Katonga bridge is expected to greatly improve connectivity in the region and contribute to Uganda’s infrastructure development.
