Former Prime Minister Amadou Ba has issued a call for national responsibility, urging President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, and parliamentarians to prioritize dialogue regarding the 2026 Supplementary Finance Law (LFR). Ba warns of detrimental economic consequences resulting from a budget deadlock, advocating for compromise before the end of the fiscal year. He emphasizes the importance of maintaining institutional functionality despite political disagreements, particularly given Senegal’s delicate economic situation. Ba highlights Senegal’s financial commitments and ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and creditors. Failure to adopt the LFR could leave CFA 540 billion in energy subsidies uncovered, leading to payment defaults and accumulated arrears. While acknowledging concerns over purchasing power, social spending, public investment, and energy subsidies, Ba stresses the need to balance fiscal discipline with protecting the population. He calls for the swift opening of institutional consultations to resolve the impasse.
