Iga Swiatek concluded her 2024 season Tuesday following a thigh injury that forced her withdrawal from the Ningbo Open. This decision simultaneously dashed the Polish player’s hopes of qualifying for the prestigious WTA Finals. The 25-year-old, a six-time Grand Slam champion, ends the year without securing a major title, her last Grand Slam victory occurring at Wimbledon last year. Swiatek needed a quarter-final appearance, at minimum, in Ningbo to challenge Karolina Muchova for the final qualifying position. A persistent left thigh issue, also apparent during her Wuhan Open semi-final loss to Maja Chwalinska, prompted the withdrawal. Despite a 39-15 record and a title win at the Canadian Open, Swiatek did not advance past the quarter-finals in any of the four Grand Slam tournaments this year.
