Soňa Krátká, caretaker of the Jewish cemetery in Pardubice, now safeguards a suitcase belonging to Leo Fürnberg, a resident of Pardubice who was deported to Terezín with his wife and twelve-year-old son. Fürnberg packed the suitcase with essential belongings before the transport to Terezín. After 84 years and a journey through Australia, France, and England, the suitcase has been returned to Pardubice. The current owner, a descendant, donated it to Krátká as a precious memento of Fürnberg’s difficult fate. Fürnberg was a shoemaker, and the suitcase represents a poignant reminder of the lives disrupted by the Holocaust. This return offers a tangible connection to the past and honors the memory of those affected by the tragedy in Terezín and beyond.
