Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye recently shared a personal anecdote about his earliest sporting memory, recalling a night in August 1992 in Ndiaganiao. As a twelve-year-old, he watched the Barcelona Olympics on a small black-and-white television alongside other children in his village. He vividly remembers watching the long jump competition, though initially unfamiliar with the athletes or the significance of the event. Faye recalled being captivated by two jumpers, Carl Lewis and Mike Powell, and instinctively rooting for Lewis, the athlete who smiled after his jump. He later learned of the historic rivalry between the two and Powell’s previous world record break in Tokyo. The President reflected that this childhood experience taught him a lesson about a nation's needs for progress and a sense of collective participation, even from afar.
