Senegal's Minister of National Education, Moustapha Mamba Guirassy, expressed surprise at the three-day strike announced by the G7 union, despite ongoing dialogue. The G7, representing seven teacher unions, plans a complete halt to classes from Wednesday, October 21st to Friday, October 23rd, citing payment delays, slow implementation of a previously signed agreement from April 16th, and persistent issues within the education sector. Minister Guirassy defended the government’s commitment to dialogue, highlighting monthly and bi-monthly meetings to address teacher concerns and monitor commitments. He also stressed the importance of maintaining Senegal’s international image ahead of the Youth Olympic Games (JOJ) Dakar 2026. The government aims to balance its commitments to teachers with ensuring uninterrupted education for students. Despite continued discussions, the strike threat persists, creating a challenge for the government to reconcile these competing priorities at the Building administratif Mamadou Dia in Dakar.
