Numerous popular websites are facing heightened vulnerability to cyberattacks due to two severe security flaws discovered in the widely-used PHP programming language. These vulnerabilities make it significantly easier for hackers to find and exploit backdoors in websites. The situation is particularly critical as a foolproof solution is currently unavailable, prompting organizations like Notubiz, a system used by one hundred municipalities in the Netherlands, and news agency ANP to proactively take their systems offline. Cloudflare, a US-based company acting as a firewall for many popular websites, is already detecting initial attack attempts, but asserts its firewall is mitigating exploitation. A permanent fix is expected at 16:00 today, though hackers reportedly found a way to exploit the issue before the initial announced solution. Despite PHP’s declining market share, it remains prevalent, and this vulnerability is categorized as highly severe, potentially allowing attackers to execute code and steal user data.
