The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ordered the preparation and issuance of a new election schedule for local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). This decision came during a hearing concerning delays in holding these elections, led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and a five-member bench. The ECP issued the order following a notice served to officials from the Ministry of Interior and the chief commissioner of ICT. Representatives from both the Ministry of Interior and the ICT, alongside ECP officials, were present during the proceedings. Citing constitutional powers and relevant acts, including the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015, the ECP directed its office to promptly prepare the election program. The commission emphasized the importance of completing all steps quickly and legally, ensuring a timely electoral process. Islamabad has been without a locally elected government for over five years.
