The Senate in Islamabad approved legislation on Monday allowing former members of the National Assembly (NA) or Senate to retain blue passports even if they did not complete a full term. The amendment to the Passports Act, 1974, grants this privilege to all who have taken oath as a parliamentarian, regardless of the length of their service. Currently, blue passports – offering visa-free travel to 55 countries including 22 in Europe – are limited to those serving at least one full term. Supporters argue the change establishes parity with other high-ranking officials and recognizes service to the state. However, a related bill seeking to extend this benefit to the dependent children under 28 of ex-members of Parliament was rejected by the Senate. The approved bill now awaits passage by the NA.
