The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) is advocating for significantly harsher penalties for those involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria. The PSN is proposing a minimum fine of N25 million (Nigerian Naira) for offenders, alongside imprisonment ranging from five to twenty years. This call for stricter measures aims to deter individuals and organizations engaged in this dangerous practice and safeguard public health across Nigeria. The society believes that current punishments are insufficient to effectively combat the issue of fake pharmaceuticals. The proposal was made during a press conference in anticipation of the PSN’s 99th annual event. The PSN asserts that these stronger penalties are crucial to protecting vulnerable populations from the harmful effects of substandard and falsified medications. Ultimately, the PSN hopes these measures will eradicate the trade of fake drugs in Nigeria.
